Surviving the Shut Down

Losing your internet connection is a major inconvenience, but it doesn't have to bring productivity to a complete halt.

If you or your students need to be taking notes, completing a writing assignment, or keeping up on your calendar, there are still ways to be productive in a non-internet scenario.

1.  Microsoft Office.

Word and Excel will always function without an internet connection, and could always be emailed as attachments when your connection is back up.

2. Google Drive OFFLINE
If you have work that has already been started, or a note taking template that you would like to work from, you can still access your Google Drive files while offline.

To set up OFFLINE Google Drive access you will need an internet connection, then follow the steps below:

Open your Google Drive, then click the downward arrow next to "More"

Next, click "Offline"
Before you can set up offline access you may need to install the Google Drive App for Chrome.  You can install the app from this link.

Once you have that installed you can click "Enable Offline" from your Drive page.

This final step will tell Google Drive to begin syncing all of the files under your account in the cloud with your computer.  Depending on how many files you have, this could take a while.

When you run into a situation where you are internetless you will need to open Chrome and head to this address: drive.google.com

Any changes you make on these documents will be automatically synced back to Google Drive the next time your computer has an internet connection.

3.  Google Calendar OFFLINE
Keeping up with your schedule can be difficult when your Google Calendar is not accessible because of internet issues.  In order to view your calendar events and reply to existing invitations despite no internet connection follow the steps below:

Open your Google Calendar.  Click on the WHEEL in the top right hand corner, then click on "Offline".

Once your calendar events have finished syncing you can access them any time by visiting www.google.com/calendar
